Watch it again with the clues in mind (see www.imdb.com )
It's very cryptic, but one of my fav films ever.
If you're expecting something straightforward like Gone with the Wind, you're always gonna be disappointed. This was a fantasy movie, to explain things deeper than the every day.
'No hay banda'...for example...there is no band. It is a recorded orchestra, the orchestra are fake. This is an extremely deep philosophical point, probably means nothing unless that perspective is assumed.
If you watch it again you'll notice that the "self awareness" and "stilted" performances you refer to are only aparent in the first half of the film because its conveyed - in my opinion - as a dream. Watch again and you'll notice that in the second half the script and performances change as does the reality of the film.
