what is one exactly? do all the stars get to see the new films before the public do? or can the public attend the premiere too

Basically it's a big publicity do. So the stars, director and other people involved in the film will turn up and lots of journalists, TV people and photographers will be invited. Generally there are some members of the public as well - tickets are often given away in competitions or sold for charity. Ironically, actual film critics will generally have been invited to special showings _before_ the so-called "premiere".
