Name Of A Tv Show (American)

We've just been to see "Vice" - terrific film, highly recommended. Sam Rockwell was in it, which got me thinking that he might have been the male lead in a US TV series (shown in the UK) probably about 20 or so years ago. It was all about a guy who was a time-traveller who went back in time and tried to mend people's lives or their situations. He had a side kick, but we can't remember his name either. We thought that the male lead might have been Sam Rockwell, but actually - we now don't think it is ... Can anyone put me out of my misery and remember the name of this TV show - we loved it at the time, it's no longer showing alas. Cheers, Chox.
