Swearing on TV before the watershed

I was watching the repeat of Top Gear this evening between 7-8pm.
In one part a guest was clearly swearing (s**t) which the BBC bleeped out. However, the guest also signed this word.
Why does this kind of censoring not apply to signed language, or, did the BBC negate to censor the signing?

The signing was in american sign language which I believe is different to British signing.

I think the kids could teach you a thing or two.I am not condoning it really but sometimes what was perceived as bad language is now common place now.Remember arse was frowned upon - it is now acceptable in BBC language day or night - so is ****** - prob cause they are recognised in the Oxford Dictionary.They are only words fundamently - its the context they are used .
