Talking Books For The Blind!

In all seriousness, I want to make my meagre acting talents useful. Does anyone know how one goes about recording talking books for the blind?

The only relevant volunteer vacancies on the RNIB website at the moment are for a Welsh-speaking reader to work from home and for an English reader to work in their Cardiff studio:

However it might still be worth contacting the RNIB to express your interest.

A few years ago a blind member of AB (Woodelf) was asking if anyone here would be prepared to read and record the works of some of his favourite authors for him. Perhaps he might still be looking for assistance?

Bednobs:
Audible (and similar services) tend to concentrate solely on works of fiction by leading authors. They also cost money.

The RNIB's talking books service is free and includes works (such as cookery books) which would never make it onto Audible.

Years ago when I worked in a university, the RNIB came in and trained a few of us volunteers to read books onto tape for students using special machines. Every page number had to be included so blind students knew where they were and could include quotes in their work. Graphs and tables had to be described. So there may still be some need for educational texts to be recorded.

I think one gets a DVD recorder and blank disks, a microphone and some books, and reads out loud.
