I have my Panasonic tv manual but there is nothing I can see that needs to be turned on or off. It is a TX-L32X5B model. You have all been very helpful but one last thing needs attention.

I think you may have to operate it via the remote control which came with it, is that the case? - my Sony soundbar was like that & that's what drove me to ditch it.
Your TV set hasn't got any dedicated audio outlets for a sound bar
https://www.manualslib.com/manual/650778/Panasonic-Viera-Tx-L32x5b.html?page=68#manual
so you'll either need to use an HDMI cable to connect to the soundbar or use the headphone output instead.

Not all sound bars have HDMI inputs, so you'll need to check whether your has or not. If it has, then simply connecting an HDMI lead between the relevant sockets might be all that you need to do. If there's no HDMI input on the sound bar (or using that connection doesn't work for you) you'll need to use a 3.5mm stereo jack-to-jack lead to connect between the headphone socket on your TV and the 3.5mm input on the soundbar. (I've never come across a soundbar that hasn't got such an input available). Discount stores often sell those leads for a pound or two. e.g. https://www.wilko.com/en-uk/wilko-35mm-jack-to-jack-cable-1m/p/0342661
They're even cheaper online:

(If you do it that way though you'll need to go into the TV's menu settings to check that the headphone volume is set to a reasonable level).

If you need further help, please tell us the model number of the soundbar.

Thank you Buenchico. The model is a Goodmans 60W 2.1 Soundbar.
The manual is here:
https://www.goodmans.co.uk/download/download/linkDirect/link_id/419/

Use a 3.5mm stereo jack-to-jack lead (as per my 2nd and 3rd links above) to connect between the headphone socket on your TV and the 'Line' socket on the side of the soundbar. (It's marked 'F' in the manual I've linked to above).

On your TV, go into the Menu and select 'Sound' and 'Headphone Volume'. Set the volume fairly high but not at the maximum level. (70% to 80% should do).

On the soundbar (which I'm assuming that you've got connected to the mains via the power adapter!), press button 'A' (as shown in the manual) to turn the power on. Select 'Line In' by following the instructions in Section 4.1 of the manual. You should then have sound coming through, so all you need to do then is to adjust the volume, using buttons 'C' and 'D' (as shown in the manual).

The soundbar is up and running now. Thank you all for your advice. It was simple in the end - I had not plugged it into the power!!!
I did ask at 10 to 5 yesterday afternoon...."have you powered it up and are there lights on?".......

Apologies Gingejbee, I had to leave the laptop, but, yes, I have got it up and working. It was simple in the end - I phoned my brother and he told me it needed to be plugged into a power source. It was as easy as that. I assumed that the tv connection would provide the sound. However my existing problem is with Sky are who have added HD to certain channels which are silent although the picture is on the screen.
