World Music : Post 3 Of 3

[Buenchico]

This is the music of Réunion, in the traditional maloya form, performed here by 11-year-old Soan in last year's Voice of Kids France competition. He's note-perfect and with excellent phrasing. (He's mastered the irregular rhythms on the roulér well too).

The song starts off in a style somewhat similar to that of Pakistan's qawwali singers but then bursts forth to become closer to the celebratory music of Madagascar.

The guy with him on his stage (on bob and kayamb) is his father, who must surely be the proudest dad in the world!

This is a totally joyous experience!

. . . and if you're wondering how well young Soan did in the competition, here's your answer: He won it!

I've learned over the years that there aren't that many fans of world music here (and even fewer when it's kids that are doing the performing) but I still like to introduce those with wider musical tastes to something a little bit different every so often!

That performance in the final reminded me of the emotion that Jacques Brel always put into his work. Young Soan clearly gave it everything he'd got, as shown by the way that he burst into tears at the end.

Thank you, too, Patsy. I wasn't sure that two songs, with one in Réunion creole and one in French, performed by a kid, would go down too well here but it's good to see that there are some people who recognise true talent (irrespective of age or language) when they encounter it ;-)

But I just had to have a rummage on YouTube to find this. The Bulgarian State Women's Choir...haunting and beautiful. Brought me to tears the first time I heard it...maybe 20 years ago. Still does. From this album...Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares
