Peter Crouch - Save Our Summer!

I am more than happy to acknowledge that I am now of an age where I no longer form part of the demographic that the majority of prime time television is aimed at.

Part of the penalty to be paid for edging out of said demographic, is being confronted with entertainment that is aimed fairly and squarely and another market - usually younger or much younger than I am.

I am equally able to say - This is not aimed at me, so I'm fine with that, because I can usually recognise the audience being hopefully attracted by a new format.

But honestly, I am mystified as you who would really be attracted to this particular output.

I watched the second episode, and was treated to Lain Gallagher being what he always is - an inarticulate foul-mouthed boring yob, unable to realise that the rictus grins and forced laughter of Mr Crouch and associate were not genuine, but were the televisual equivalent of rabbits caught in car headlights.

Add in the pointless and uncomfortable mis-cast Alex Horne, and the said associate apparently having her knees up inside her dress for the duration, and I can't see this making the end of its run, much less being re-commissioned.

I have enjoyed his podcasts, but a few minutes of this and I retuned.

Hopkirk - I see this as yet another mis-step by the BBC in seeing someone as something they are not.

Remember Len Goodman - old cockerney Len having an Ow's yer father on Strictly, and being everyone's favourite avuncular judge?

As usual, the BBC saw this as meaning that he was lead host material for a prime time quiz show, and hey presto! Out of his comfort zone, Uncle Len is a boring old trout with the charisma of a worn out tap shoe - cue disaster and end of quiz.

Now here we are with Peter Crouch - excellent footballer, credible pundit, author of two humorous books - must be a shoe-in for a Saturday Night Prime Time format even Michael Barrymore would turn his nose up at!

And here we go - he is hopeless at reading an autocue, looks uncomfortable and lost with his co-host with whom he has the interaction and dynamic he would have with a Milwall defender on a Tuesday night in November.

Being a nice guy does not equip you with the myriad skills necessary to carry off an entertainment show - and its clear, two shows in, that PC knows he is out of his depth.

Hopefully they'll put it out of its misery.

My question is - who pays the people who foist this garbage on licence payers?

Why can't they find someone who can do their job - find someone suitable!!!!

This is the BBC, one of the premier broadcasting companies in the world.

They have the access to, and the money to pay for the very best in talent right across the board, and that includes creating formats for entertainment.

The only factor lockdown presents is the absence of a studio audience, and given the entertainment level of this guff, that saves them the wearisome task of re-dubbing laughter from another show where the audience were actually entertained by what they were watching, and not have to work with the silence, boos, and sounds of doors slamming this tripe would have produced.

Not all of the stop gap cobbled together programmes made hurriedly to fill the schedules have worked - thankfully some have.

I know Alex Horne from 8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown - I have rarely seen a man who looks more uncomfortable on television.

Given that his humour is dubious at best - why do they keep putting him on?

Alex Horne is the creator of Taskmaster, which is consistently one of the funniest shows on TV.

Even given that fact, I won't be watching this programme.

I didn't know that - maybe he should stay behind the scenes, or stick to his lucrative career in cabaret and corporate entertainment - mainstream TV is just not his forte.

Peter Crouch reminds me of some tall footballing monument that people have decided to renovate and recast as an entertainer in dodgy shirts.
