Retired Teachers Needed

I keep hearing about bringing retired teachers back to help with the current crisis - as happened regarding doctors. I am more than willing to put in a couple of mornings per week (ex-English teacher, Secondary level) to try to help pupils catch up in English. I already used to put in Monday mornings as a volunteer with the local Academy, in order to boost Reading Ages with the struggling ones, before the schools closed and I am police checked. I don't do computers.

Question is - does anyone know how I go about 'joining up' for a bit? I think that if I were planning lessons, marking etc. then I would want paying. It all seems to be a bit 'airy-fairy' at the moment and local school is not organised.

I don't think there is a requirement yet. Even supply teachers who are normally in demand daily have been furloughed though to end August but have been told that the furlough will then end and they expect there to be a lot of demand from 1st September.
I think it may take schools a few weeks to find workable routines even in September and they may just try to make do and mend and not focus on the curriculum as much as normal. There may still be some home/online learning so I'm not sure there will be a place for retired teachers.
There was talk of summer schools but nothing concrete has been announced and I doubt it will happen apart from perhaps for some pupil premium children

Unless I've missed something there's nothing formal yet, so at the moment the only thing to do would be to speak to a local school to see if they are interested.

On the other hand, in September I think there's a plan for some National Tutoring Scheme, and when further details are announced you might want to look into that. As best I understand, certain (as yet unknown) tuition agencies will be called upon, but I'm sure there wouldn't be a problem with a former teacher jumping into one of said agencies and getting involved. Given that it would be a £billion-odd scheme I don't think pay would be a problem either.

I did my time...and thoroughly enjoyed the students...but enough is enough....!!! You go for it Jourdain2 but I am also in full agreement that this is a right demi derriere type scheme and thank you Douglas. I will be using that in the future

Thanks, all. ................. N.J. It is an emergency or else I wouldn't go anywhere near, but the voluntary reading-tutoring has brought me back into the swing of things to some extent. No way would I want to be involved with the general horrors; I'm happy to just teach and help out.
