oh dear. what might the reaction of certain adherents of a certain religion be to this - and could it be argued that Charlie Hebdo will have brought any adverse reaction on themselves?

Most religions get slated for various reasons. They can only hope it won't happen again. Their insurance might raise though.

No it can't be argued that they would have brought any violent reaction on themselves - no excuse for violence. They will probably bring adverse comment/reaction from some quarters - but that's Charlie Hebdo's stock in trade and it is necessary in society to have an irritant. Good for them in refusing to be frightened about re-publishing.
I have a copy of the original paper and the one with Mohammed looking sad - I think it's captioned 'Not in my name'. I really must get around to getting them framed. I'll never forget the feeling throughout France - we all said 'Je suis Charlie' on greeting anyone and it was good to feel the unity of the peaceful majority.

At no point did I suggest that any reprisals should be tolerated, indeed should any occur they should be pounced on heavily.
