Help with old movie

All i can remember is a young boy lost in the desert?? the only company he has is a scottie dog. I remember one scene in which he fell down a big well like hole. Im sure it was shown on a Sunday afternoon years ago on itv and i found it quite scary (i was only about 6 at the time) can anyone help?

That was probably something like Lassie, Champion the Wonder Horse or Skippy. Don't know when you were 6 though.

Hi texol, was it called Dirkie? It was about a boy who got lost in the desert, set in South Africa, he got rescued by some tribesman but in his delirium thought that they had killed and eaten his dog? If you google it there are some sites with more info.
