Sometimes Hawkeye was used at the F Open, but was only available to broadcasters for tv use. The on court umpire goes by the marks left on the court.

Strange there are no limits on how many times players can ask the umpire to check the mark on clay, but on other types of court there are three (wrong) challenges per set allowed.

Oddly enough it's been experimented with in football too, going back a few years to when Barcelona trialled a similar system to define a ball being out of play having seen it used successfully in tennis at Wimbledon

Very doubtful decision on the part of the umpire in the last set if the Goeff match yesterday. I was glad her opponent eventually won. I think she was hard done by .

Didn't see the incident you refer to, Rosie, but we have to remember that, without access to video evidence, officials only get to see these things once, and from only one angle. I've sat and watched football on tv and shouted 'Penalty!" only for replays to prove me totally wrong. An umpire can only call what he/she sees.

I would hazard a guess that because of the 'mark' left by the balls on clay courts is 'usually' sufficient for an official to make a call, the expense of fitting Hawkeye would prove uneconomical?

You're probably right Ken and looking at a mark is a bit iffy but to me yesterday it looked obvious. The commentators were pretty indignant as well. Anyway the Italian won . But Coco's serve needs a bit of work otherwise it might have been a different story.

The scuff mark only shows where the ball hit the court and the width of the scuff is less than the diameter of the ball. I think the rules state that "any part of the ball" is relevant. In other words if the ball bounces very close to the line the scuff mark can be all at one side of the line where, in reality, part of the ball overlaps the line. Hawkeye assumes full diameter of the ball, so should be more accurate.
The bottom line is that people believe computers and, in any case, you can't argue with them, so Hawkeye saves hassle.
