If it's the one I'm thinking of, it's actually called Philadelphia and is by Neil Young. It's on the soundtrack CD to the film.
Yes I think it is Neil Young also .... it was beaten out of a grammy by Bruce Springsteens Streets of Philiadelphia in the same year....I definitely prefer Neil Youngs offering ....absolutely haunting.

I seem to remember a lot of opera in the movie, performed by Maria Callas. Not sure if this was what was at the end of the film, I always find the sound track listing feature on ImdB pretty good for this sort of thing
Neil Young does have a bit of a high-pitched voice, but it's easily recognisable as male I think. Yes, Maria Callas was used in the film, but not right at the end. Is the sequence you're thinking of Lu-B, when 'Tom Hanks' is dying and the family are all around, and then watching videos etc? If so, that's the Neil Young song, from what I can remember! Brilliant film.
