no sequel and the subject of much debate and theorising. I can remember when we were kids with mum and dad putting together our proposed solutions to the problem.
Must be the 3rd time I've watched it, essential Christmas viewing, just waiting for bridge over the river Kwai
Has he still got a plan?
Bazile should have with all that gold onboard, just a bar at a time and find that land rover for recovery lol
Up until at least the mid 1970s (and possibly later), the British film censors would not allow general release of a film which depicted the bad guys winning (unless it was based on historic events). The logic being this could encourage member of the public to engage in criminal activity – believing they could also commit such a crime and get away with it.

I always understood this to be the reason for the film’s ending – at the time, the film censors would not have allowed Michael Caine and his gang to get away with the heist.
The British Board of Film Classification almost certainly had no influence on the ending of the Italian job. I doubt they could ban works of fiction if the baddies won. That sounds like a myth.
They did ban (not give a certificate) for Marlon Brando’s ‘The Wild Ones’ on the grounds that it could encourage social unrest by motorcycle gangs. It was eventually released in the UK and the ban was shown to be ludicrous. It is now certified as PG.
Caine claimed it was done at the censors' insistence

//It was confirmed by Sir Michael Caine on The Graham Norton Show (2007) that this movie ended with the criminals not escaping because the censors would not let them show criminals getting away with a crime. //

But there numerous other claims, some of them on that page (eg it was to leave the way open for a sequel).
Although it didnt receive much criticalacclaim I quite liked the remake, absolutely nothing to do with Charlise Theron in it.....
remake? what remake?
