Thoroughly enjoyed the music, dancing and photography today, but the icing on the cake was the fact that, as the announcer commented, the Radetzky March was played as the composer intended, without an audience clapping away during its performance. Well done Riccardo Muti and all the performers.

A march tempo is quite straightforward with not too much deep emotion and nuance involved. My niece is a cellist and agrees that for longer pieces, like an opera or symphony, the conductor is essential. I did smile though once while she described a time when she was, "Sawing her way through Siegfried."
