Emmerdale's Non White Population.
128 Answers
I've just watched Emmerdale for the first time in literally years, probably 10 years or more.
Emmerdale as far as I know has always been about life in a little fictional Yorkshire village of the same name.
My question is... why are there so many black, asian and mixed race people in this little english village?? Judging by tonights episode, and I've been told this has been the norm for quite some time, well over 50% of the residents are non white. It was like I was watching a north African soap.
I live in a small west sussex village, bigger than Emmerdale is supposed to be. We have ONE black resident and he was adopted.
I have nothing against seeing non whites on tv but come on, over 50% in a little Yorkshire village??? Let's be realistic!!!
Is this just the woke tv producers pushing their wokeness (if there is such a word) on to us? Because we also have the same situation with adverts to.
In fact if you watch tv nowadays, certainly in the uk, but I suspect everywhere else too, you could be forgiven for thinking non whites were the majority.
Why are tv companies and the media in general doing this???

If you were watching a show with a 100% white cast, you wouldn't have batted an eyelid about it. You're only interested in it being out of proportion when you feel it's the people you feel most comfortable with being marginalised.

Andres.... even if 50/50 was correct, which it most definitely wasnt, certainly not for the second of this evenings episodes. But even if it was right and it was 50/50 that is still not right. Not when non whites are only 12% of the total population of the uk!
And even less so in a tiny Yorkshire village.

judderman--I was not disagreeing with you. Just pointing out the main characters in tonight's show. Stark contrast to the Classic Emmerdale where at the moment there is just one non-white girl.
I do agree with you with regard to the adverts. I've never seen as many mixed race married couples and half-caste children .

"Corbyloon.... you were obviously watching something else!!"
No, I looked for the cast list on the first episode to-night but there wasn't one so I had to get it from to-night's second episode.
It was a faff because I watched it on my 'phone and when I paused it to read the names, I left the site to note it on my 'phone, went back and it carried on again.
I wasn't familiar with the character names so it too a while flicking back and forward and pausing play.
There was a site with most of the characters and images but not all of them so I Googled the others.
My findings were as I previously posted and were for the two episodes.

I have mentioned a similar thing before - not only adverts, but programmes like Escape To The Country and A Place In The Sun seem to have an increased number of non whites in the episodes being reshown. I do not have a problem with that, what I do have a problem with is the programme schedulers thinking that I am not capable of watching programmes containing only white people without making my own mind up whether or not they are representative.
I know it's many years since Emmerdale dropped the word 'Farm' from the title but this thread reminded me of a story from years ago.
