Can anyone tell me why on earth did they ruin this great series with unsteady cam? Can't watch it, my eyes are constantly dancing around trying to steady the scenes. What kind of person uses the camera this way, was it some clown who thought it necessary?

In fact, it's simply some smart-aris who has come up with an idea which he thinks is "cool". I think it's supposed to make the viewer feel he is "in with the action". In fact all it does, as you say, is makes the viewer nauseous.
Shame because L&O UK has some good yarns and it runs at a good pace.

The technique is meant to give a 'documentary' feel to programmes.
It can drive me crazy too. When I first tried viewing 'The Office' I found it be almost unwatchable because of the handheld camera technique it used. (That was even before I realised that I found the programme to be totally unfunny anyway).

It was for a time the 'must do' style for drama as it was touted by media colleges and media darlings everywhere especially in France as the most arty way of depicting reality by showing the viewer that the play was actually being filmed and was not staged! After a few years of being the 'in' style it was dropped as being just plain stupid. Unfortunately it renders some programmes now worthy of the scrap yard.
