There are a lot of links to real life cases, there were parts of both the Stephen Lawrence and Christopher Alder cases, hence (I assume) the character name, Laurence Christopher.

Also a nod to the murder of Jill Dando (Gail Vella's murder) and some other cases in earlier series'.
