What Has Happened To Weddings?
32 Answers
When I got married my bride to be stressed about her choice of frock and the colours for the bridesmaid and flowers. I'm sure my wife will say there was much more to stress about than that.
Apart from that it was a simple, happy day.
We've just been invited to a wedding and it has a 1920s theme! Why? Surely the theme is 'wedding' and it is now a fancy dress party. I see weddings as a chance to buy a new suit, perhaps, a new shirt and tie anyway and a fancy frock and hat for my wife. Clothes that can be worn many times more.
A couple of years ago we were invited to a wedding with a Blues Brothers theme. We managed to dodge that one without causing offence.
So, what's with themed weddings? I don't get it

After spending a fortune on new suits for OH and youngest son (who wears blue suits.. really?), when we got to the wedding her family must not have been able to read the brief, as all the men were just wearing blue ties and the mother of the bride was in pink!
Before social media reared its ugly head, my nephew had a bells and whistles wedding - Mediaeval theme (so had to hire appropriate attire), bride arrived on white charger at the castle venue where Mediaeval food was served with just a wooden spoon for cutlery in a freezing Great Hall. Said couple are now divorced. .......
I got married in the 70s Registry office on a Monday morning in January wearing a purple outfit with flared trousers and a cape and wearing purple platform soled boots!! Very few guests and just a get together at my parents home. He was.back on nightshift the next day. We had no money. Noone dressed up. I never have liked weddings.
My son and his wife had a registry office wedding and a party in the evening. His request was that it was casual and he wouldn't be wearing a tie under any circumstanes and wouldnt expect others to. It was a great party in the evening!!

I have no idea what has happened to weddings. When I married, my mother made my dress and her own and the baby bridesmaid's dress. Sis made the cake, Dad grew all the flowers except for the carnation button holes, Mum made my bridal posy and the bridesmaid's matching flower basket, my other sis did my hair and we did all the catering ourselves. Oh and I printed the invitations. Yes I come from a talented family but some degree of DIY was not uncommon. There were no "themes", evening events, hen and stag weekends, save the date nonsense and so on. Everyone was invited to the wedding and the reception. I am not saying that some of the planning wasn't a bit stressful, but bridezilla was not a thing and would not have been tolerated.
I think that a lot of people mix up weddings and marriages. Weddings may cost thousands but marriages don't. When people say they can't afford to get married, what they mean is they can't afford an extravagant wedding. You can get married for very little. Weddings are an industry now. They never used to be.
And to me running off and eloping is romantic. Extravagant weddings are not romantic or emotional in my opinion. I avoid them as much as possible and if I can't, I will dress as I feel fit and it won't be a wedding type outfit such as 'mother of the bride/groom!! I will look presentable though, but not conventional.
Wedding planners!!! Pah !
Wedding lists , cheeky in my opinion !!!
Not bothered if they get two tea sets , give one away
Do they still get a tea set?
I got an eternal bow one, everybody did :0)))
3 pyrex bowls ,cream with a few flowers on
A towel bale
Candy stripe sheets
Now it’s a microwave or vouchers, even money toward going away
