Yes, I agree, all very worthy programmes - except I wish VCM would cut down on her "Jokes" which make me cringe at times. But, as we have seen before on Ab, humour is a very personal thing and no doubt many folk enjoy them.
Canary, VCM writes a funny and thoughtful TV column in the Telegraph on Saturdays. Not a paper I normally get but I pick up a free one at Waitrose and much enjoy reading her.
Surely Victoria Coren-Mitchell is sending herself up knowingly and deliberately when she cracks her jokes. The only other thing she could do is wink at the screen. She’s too bright, perky and clever to be so naive as to think the jokes are really funny.
naomi - // helly, you're quite right - and the resulting 'tumblewood' just adds to the delicious awfulness. :o) //
It does appear that some viewers think the 'jokes' are genuine, and awful, and others see that they are 'ironic', which to me adds to my perception of a programme that is far too pleased with itself to actually be entertaining.
It's meant to be about challenging, hard questions that make you think, designed primarily for quiz nuts, as well as celebrating the weird and quirky. Why wouldn't it be pleased with itself?
