Does anyone know if that ghastly red table in the BBC Olympic studio is meant to represent something? Many thanks.

If so, my best guess is that it's a very stylised representation of the islands that make up Japan, with the northernmost island represented on the left of the studio image:

By the way, they are in Salford not Tokyo.

it's a weird set - anyone below could've looked up alex's skirt
^no, bednobs, they couldn't...the set is all smoke and mirrors (green-screen actually) and they are on a solid studio floor in Salford.
The table is not as troubling as Clare Balding. She is everywhere !!!
Weird set!!
