Anyone watch this earlier on C5 at 7pm?
I recorded it as I knew I wouldn't be back from my birthday tea at my daughters.
It was a hotel in Paris called George V, and I watched it because a friend of mine is going there next March for her daughters birthday.
They're not staying there, but are going for a meal which costs, (would you believe) £330 for the taster menu! That's each!
Having watched what you get to eat, I must say, I wouldn't fancy it at all.
Apparently the Beatles stayed there once and George Harrison was heard to say he preferred an egg butty rather than the caviar.

I've never been to France, let alone that hotel. However, I have seen that hotel mentioned in numerous novels.

Really sanmac? Must admit I'd never heard of it before, it's far too grand for me, but my friend will love it I'm sure.
Just wondered with other Abers if this was a place they would like to visit or not.
It would not interest me.

We had a cruise holiday once, when our cabin was rendered unsuitable because of technical problems with a lift shaft opposite which they would be unable to repair until they put into port, so they upgraded us to a suite, which included a butler.

I felt really uncomfortable, and made it clear that his offers to cater a dinner or drinks party for us were not likely to be accepted, and his offer to pack our cases prior to disembarkation was similarly politely declined.

There is a level of luxury which would not only be wasted on me, but would make me actively unhappy, so I would never want to stay anywhere that offered it.

I don;t imagine the majority of viewers would be interested in, or able to stay in a hotel like that - we Brits just like seeing how the proverbial 'other half' live, so they make TV programmes about it.
Oh yes, many mentions, and the characters staying and/or meeting there are usually young rich and famous or old rich and criminal:)
I have walked past it (does that count?)
Of course it counts, toorak: at least you've seen it whereas I've only read about it:)
I won't say no if someone else is paying ;-)

For a snack though, I might head to Ibiza to try the tasting menu here (for a mere €1500, again if someone else is footing the bill):

Stayed at the George V many years ago. Took my daughter when she was 16. We had a lovely room. Ate one meal in the restaurant. Lovely meal but did not eat caviare!
I can confirm everything that Mr Hughes posted above because you see, dear reader, I was that butler.

Butlers, concierges, valets and maids concluded that he must be a bit of a one.

Joyless even.

I don't even know how much a euro is!
They said a cup of hot chocolate costs 28 euros, how much is that in pounds?
about £24

£24!! that's half my weekly shop.
£24 was my whole weekly shop this week!
Douglas - You'll remember the name of the ship then, won't you...
I should cocoa.
That would be 'No' then, and another of your creaky efforts at off-topic personal popping.

How tedious.
I'm with Mr Hughes. I wouldn't be relaxed if I had lots of flunkies trying to do things for me.

I would even rather carry my own suitcase to my room.
Me too Hopkirk.
I am the same hopkirk - I hate being fussed over
I've been to ' George Cinq' a few times in the past. A couple of times for afternoon tea with my French Grannie in the 1980's and once for 'Pappie's' special birthday meal. I guess its changed a lot since those days and caters now for the super-rich rather than well to do Parisiens.
