Emmie, if you change your mind and decide to try a Ricky Gervais series, 'Extras' is on BBC. Lots of famous faces in every episode. I've just finished watching it. There are three series of, I think, six episodes each and a Christmas special to finish off with.

I hope Emmie gives Extras a try but I know she really dislikes RG. I guess we all have different tastes in humour.

Tigger, I didn't like him at all before I watched the first series of Afterlife.
Question Author
I meant to say I think his programmes are far more than humour. They offer astute observations of life and of human nature.
I've loved him since The Office when it first aired years ago. It was actually quite funny that many, who were not aware of RG before that, thought it was a real fly on the wall documentary, ha!

Absolutely - underneath the humour there is perfect pathos in the examination of fame, and human relationships.

It's a wonderful piece of work.
They do indeed. His style of comedy is multi-layered.
He tackles many subjects others fear to tread or fail if they do attempt it. Its the way he does it that is so clever.
An extremely intelligent and observant man with a unique sense of humour and a great love of animals. Love him!!
Yes, he is very passionate about animal welfare.
Question Author
I'd really only seen him doing bits of comedy before and he came across as coarse and big headed so I avoided him.
Naomi- where is it on please
'Afterlife' had a promising story-line & could have been much better if Gervaise hadn't directed it alone as well as writing it, we found the endless references to genitalia (& we are no prudes) really tiresome & some of the characters were just daft, not funny (i.e. the psychiatrist) we abandoned it.

Try 'Undercover' for a good series, btw.

Margo. I've just checked my recordings and it's on Gold. Sorry, I was thinking it was on BBC. Just put it in your search box.

Khandro, all his series are coarse ('Derek' I think is by far the worst - but brilliant nonetheless) ....but if you can get past that they really are worth watching.
I just let the coarseness go over my head these days. It represents real life. Not my life by any means. If it's appropriate for the character in a a
drama then so be it.
Loads of RG's stuff on Netflix. You bay £5.99/month for the basic package and you can cancel straight away and still have your month where you can cram in as much of him as you wish.
If I remember correctly Em has seen very little of RG and decided she didn't like him and has refused several suggestions to give him another chance. It's her loss because he's the best around at the moment, by far.
I love him !
Thanks Naomi I'll check it out. Sorry just got back from having an X-ray so only just seen this
I have to disagree with Khandro - I thought the psychiatrist/therapist was hilarious.

Series 3 didn't appeal to me quite as much as 1 & 2, but I'd still watch it all again.
windywillow: //I have to disagree with Khandro - I thought the psychiatrist/therapist was hilarious.//

If that character was in a Monty Python sketch called say, 'The yobbo sex-mad therapist loser' I might have found him funny - though that is perhaps an insult to the Python team!

As a director, Gervaise isn't self-critical enough, it all reflects his 'I don't care' motto, - but then, other people's sense of humour is an eternal enigma.
Question Author
Khandro, I tried - and failed - two or three times to find anything to laugh at in ‘The Office’ - but recently I thought I’d give it another try - and suddenly I get it! Weird - but I think Gervais is so different I wasn’t ‘tuned in’.
