There are loads that I find myself saying to the tv screen ‘I’ve no idea how they ever became successful or even got offered any parts!’, but yesterday I found myself walking in lounge and an episode of Birds of a Feather was on. And there was Linda Robson. Quite how she ever got offered parts is beyond me - she only seems to play one role, and as for her voice……. Yes I know she has an East End accent, but she honestly sounds as though she has a peg on her nose….. I had to turn over as I couldn’t stand listening to it. Yes I know that's my opinion only and loads probably think she’s a great actress, but who can’t you stand to watch, or are amazed that they even became successful??

Hopkirk - // Most of the cast of EastEnders. //

I think, as I said earlier, that applies to virtually all soap actors.

I know they worry about being typecast, and some leave believing that they have a pedigree, and they sink without trace.

I don't watch soaps, but when i did, i could never envisage any of them doing anything anywhere else.

There are exceptions of course - Thelma Barlow was utterly brilliant in Dinnerladies, as was Ann Reid, but they are the exceptions.

I chatted with Thelma Barlow at a TV shoot once, she has an absolutely beautiful speaking voice, about an octave below the 'Mavis' one, with a wonderfully modulated accent, so different from her Corrie character.
You could send in a cardboard cut out and won't be able to tell its not the real Hugh Grant.

Just lucky he had good scripts imo.
I always find Brad Pitt sounds the same in all his films including Troy.
Jim Carey, Steve Coogan, My pet hate is that one trick pony Adam Sandler, what a duffer.
Jack Black (ugh!) & Charlton Heston.
i happen to love John Wayne and he was as different in Stagecoach as in The Searchers, great movies.

Andy - I agree completely abut Thelma Barlow - just brilliant in Dinnerladiea. How long ago since you spoke to her?? x

Honestly don’t know much about John Wayne - bit before my time, but lots saying the same about him.
i wonder if they have seen The Searchers, John Wayne's best role.
//I think, as I said earlier, that applies to virtually all soap actors.//

Andy, like you I don't watch soap operas as they bore me rigid, but plenty of successful and critically acclaimed actors have come from soaps. The likes of Naomi Watts, Russell Crowe, Guy Pierce, Margot Robbie, Ben Mendelsohn and Chris Hemsworth all originated from Aussie soaps.

I personally think that it's irrelevant how talented an actor may be, when faced with a soap opera script, it lowers the standard for all.
John Wayne was no actor. He was always John Wayne. The same man in varying situations, dressed in different costumes and saying different words. Even as the Roman Centurion posted at the foot of the cross he was still John Wayne.

Someone mentioned Hugh Grant, but although he's known for his 'light' roles, he was first class as Jeremy Thorpe in A Very English Scandal. He acted - and he did it superbly.
Question Author
Naomi I agree about Hugh Grant - he was excellent.
John Wayne took part in over 160 films and ABers have come up with 3 in which they believe he did a good job. Says everything, imho.
