Hmmm...

The licence fee system has always been an obnoxious oppressive tax, it isn't so much that it should be scrapped but that it should never have been implemented in the first place.

However, having the BBC has value to the UK, and should be kept going, even if it must adhere to obligatory guidelines about bias, standard of programmes, and the like.

Chasing limited ad revenue is a disastrous suggestion. One only has to look at the quality of offerings from other channels ever since the UK switched from 5 terrestrial analogue channels to a multitude of digital ones. It's right down the pan and one ends up with a choice between repeats galore, or lowest common denominator quality, due, presumably, to low budgets.

IMO the BBC should still be publicly funded, and have It's own voice, but needing to justify what it puts out. How that is achieved when one needs to balance both independence and insistence of standards and lack of bias, is not easy to see; and is where attention and discussion needs to concentrate.

The BBC should be defunded and become a subscription service. If its as good as its advocates claim then it will have no problems, however if people dont see it in the rose tinted view of some then it will have to adjust its stance in order to survive.

I am one of the people who dont pay the licence but it really is not right I should be stopped from watching commercial stations becuiase I wont pay for their propaganda.

The problem there is that so many people would opt out that the subs would have to be unaffordably high and then BEEB would either fold or become a much diminished presentation.

Plus as a window on Britain to the world, one would be expecting the volunteer subscribers to pay it all. It needs to be funded from general taxation. The issue is how it can be made to adhere to necessary guidelines whilst retaining the ability to tackle what it chooses without interference or being seen as a government mouthpiece, such as media in tyrannies inevitably are. A good feat if one can achieve it.
