The DJ was Ed Byrnes who had a hit in 1960 with Connie Stevens: Kookie Kookie (Lend Me Your Comb),

I remember in the opening credits he walks out of number 77 and combs his hair! (Robert Stack was in it aswell I think) I was only about 7 or 8 when it was on in UK but I always remember the beginning, oh and the song!

Dot - don't remember Robert Stack being in it (he may have been, though), but as I recall the male lead was Efrem Zimbalist Jr. And I loved Connie Stevens as Cricket Blake in Hawaiian Eye - when we visited Hawaii some years ago we stayed at the Hawaiian Village Hotel, and despite lots of alterations and additions to the buildings the Shell Bar was (almost) just as I remembered it in the series....magic! Which has nothing to do with Grease! Years ago I played bass in the band for a stage production; the film took lots of liberties with the original stage show, in which Rock n' Roll Party Queen is played (naturally) at a party in (I think) Doody's family's garage. Some of the good songs (that wasn't one of them!) were dropped from the film but resurfaced as incidental music, and without digging out the video I have a feeling scooby may well be right.

Ed Byrnes has had his subsequent career blighted by his role of 'Kookie' - one of the earliest examples of type casting. It is a fantastic film though - including the appearence of Sha Na Na as Johnny 'Casino And The Gamblers'. They were a bona fide rock and roll tribute band who played at the Woodstock festival.
