Graham Linehan hits my funny bone square-on - I think Father Ted, The IT Crowd, Black Books and Motherland are works of inspired genius. Other's probably don't think that.
I've seen it said there's no such thing as "cancel culture" - I've even seen it said on this board, but that is just simply a lie. Linehan has been cancelled.
Linehan has been cancelled for holding views that the vast vast majority of people believe, such as;
1. Sex is immutable.
I hate to break it to those that thrive in cancelling, but this is 100% biologically correct - get over it.
2. Women (you know, the old-fashioned women, those that have a uterus), deserve their own spaces.
3. Transgender women (or men as they used to be called) have no place competing against real women in sport.
Leith Arches, the venue that has cancelled him has done so because they are "inclusive". Surely by cancelling him they have shown they are very much not inclusive.
Can anybody tell me why one of the greatest comedy writers of all time has been cancelled for holding views that the vast majority of the population agree with?
I haven't posted a link simply because there's far too many and I couldn't decide which one was the best to highlight the bigoted view of those who cancel.
bakers don't have to make cakes for gays if they don't want to. Venues don't have to stage shows by gender-critical writers if they don't want to. That's the world we live in.
But they'd be morally wrong to cancel on someone having previously agreed, as it is an inappropriate "justification". Which is why one hopes they suffer the consequences arising from decent members of the public avoiding the venue in future.
I do think that the entire concept of 'cancelling' is abhorrent.
I don;t understand why the woke brigade fail to grasp that 'inclusivivity' means exactly that - and it's not confined to the people who think and speak as they do.
If someone wants to adopt a view about the persecution of a section of society, then persecution of someone who happens to hold a different view, is surely rather against the point.
I must confess, at my age, I don't bump into people who think and feel like this, but if I did, there would be a robust conversation taking place.
If you did bump into somebody who felt you had the ‘wrong’ opinion Andy, you would be cancelled. The woke (and woke is a legitimate term) simply cannot accept that people may have the temerity to disagree with them.
Deskdiary - // If you did bump into somebody who felt you had the ‘wrong’ opinion Andy, you would be cancelled. //
That would be interesting - I wonder what it would feel like.
I suppose, if you think about it, being 'cancelled' is a nebulous concept, much like 'fame' and 'celebrity' - commonly used words, with no actual concrete definition we can all understand and use as a reference point.
But to repeat my point, it is fascism write large, and it has no place in a modern society.
