3 parsing queries :-

1)  Obscure error in field by troops in France once (5) B?F?G. Well, it's obviously BEFOG for the definition "Obscure", but I don't get the rest.

2)  Atmosphere almost calm for plane (3,5,3)  A?R  ?O?C?  O?E It's obviously AIR FORCE ONE (plane), but I don't understand why "almost calm" = FORCE ONE.  Is there a scale (like Beaufort) for calmness, so that FORCE ZERO = CALM, and FORCE ONE is just a little bit less calm?

3)  Intemperance admitted: starting a bit late (5)  G?E?D. The answer is GREED, but I'm not very happy about GREED being synonymous with Intemperance (would river be a synonym for water?), and I don't get the parsing at all.

Many TIA to those of you who put up with my pedantic quibbles and provide enlightenment.

BEF is British Expeditionary Force (Brit Army unit), but the OG bit beats me

... BEF were in France before WW1

OG, own goal, error.

Brill neveracrossword, thanks.

Thanks, Canary42.

I think 2 is simply the Beaufort scale. A  'Force O' wind is 'calm', a Force 1 is ' light air' - so Force 1/one is almost calm.
