Strange Noise Outside
I first noticed it when I went to bed, I have the windows open.
A low, continuous rumble like grumbling thunder. I can still hear it now. It's definitely outside. There is no thunder predicted over recent days. Could it be some other weather or atmospheric condition?
The volume does drop for a while but there is no discernible pattern.
Any ideas?

As you say a continuous rumble. I thought perhaps it came from the farm, but all was in darkness there. It wasn't like the noises we get from a nearby airfield. It was more like rhe start of the earthquake we had years ago. We only have two neighbours ours and is wasn't them!
There have been reports of strange hums from many places of late. When I moved into my house in this village I was plagued by a low hum - really noticeable at night - that my partner could not hear, leading to much friction between us. I even got the council to come out but the guy couldn't hear it either (though one of my then neighbours could, and also in his house). Definitely wasn't a boiler, electric substation or any of the other things suggested.

I hear at times a hum from next door, but I know what it is, their boiler. The fan and pump run on for a set time after the boiler switches off. But if the mother board on the boiler is playing up they can carry on for an unlimitted time.
I saw him out front the other week just having a general chat, and he happen to say is electric bills are getting out of hand, so i mentioned what could be using the excess. I now don't here it so must have had it fixed, not seen much of him since, so no feed back as yet.
