If you had 2 people working in the same workplace doing the same job and hours, but one was paid the going rate and the other was a volunteer. Who do you think would get away with breaking more of the workplace rules and regulations, or if you like, push the rules and regulations to the limit and get away with it. And which one of the two do you think is likely to try.

It depends which one wants to keep the job more (whatever their reasons).

I would argue the volunteer would be more likely to stick to the rules and the paid employee to try to get away with shortcuts.

Well lets add a little more to the OP then, which one would the boss tend to tolerate more.

Obviously the volunteer. Then he could sack the paid one and get another volunteer in instead

Does the volunteer know that somebody is getting paid to do the same job?

I'd be taking my good deeds elsewhere rather than break any rules.
