'Home Office minister Chris Philp had a cringeworthy moment on Question Time last night. When an audience member asked him whether people coming from Congo – a country that’s at war with Rwanda – would be sent on flights to Rwanda, Philp floundered. He said: “there’s an exclusion on people from Rwanda being sent to Rwanda.” The audience member reminded him that he was talking about Congo…
To which Philp questioned whether the two were different countries: “From Congo? well… Rwanda is a different country from Congo isn’t it?”. If ministers don’t understand the basics…'
Sorry Tora, yes he got there in the end (as the BBC clip does in fact show) but he really did appear to be completely thrown by the geography.
You know that scene in Fawlty Towers at the end of "The Germans where the German guest says "How did they ever win?!"
I've felt like that a few times since Dec 2019 ...
The point wasn't geography though, he missed the principle of the question. This is like many of my TWAU posts, you first must distill the real question and that is what he failed to do. A is at war with B, if someone from A turns up here illigally should they be sent to B? That is the real question and the answer is; of course not. The questioner along with the rest of us of course already knew the answer so the question was as often the case on QT just a foil to have a go at the policy.
