latest poll from yougov suggests that Reform are almost equal with the conservatives. if people did actually vote this way then this would mean total electoral wipeout and the party would be overtaken by the lib dems as official opposition.

if more polls indicate this kind of fate then how desperate might the tories get? could they go so far as getting rid of sunak?

Before the election? No chance.

Wouldn't the SNP be the official opposition party?

Question Author

oh yes it could be. perhaps i got a seat prediction mixed up

Before an election, no. The process would take too long anyway.

After they lose he'll resign before he's pushed.

Maybe you just saw gulliver's post the other day 'claiming' the polls suggested this.

Another Labour fantasy.  What you actually need to consider is what would happen if, after 6 months Keir Starmer isnt able to do all the things he's promising, who will step into his shoes.

Question Author

no i definitely saw a seat prediction but i think it was older

Question Author

do you really think the conservatives are going to just ignore polling like this? the situation is getting very desperate indeed for them.

Hi untittled ! I thought you had been modded out.... nice to see you posting. I dont... think this has ever happened during a general election. Much more the monarch asked someone to form 'a ministry' and they did or didnt ( or said no)

Voting Patterns in the C18 J H Plumb is your text for the 1700s but they didnt really have parties then.

"do you really think the conservatives are going to just ignore polling like this? the situation is getting very desperate indeed for them."

There's not much they can do about it really. Anyone with any sense will have already decided who (if anybody) they will vote for and will not be influenced by politicians falling off surfboards, touring round biscuit factories in a hard hat, getting in the way of the workers, or arguing the toss on ridiculous "head to head" debates.

Most people will have judged them by what they have done, not what they say they will do. Anyone basing heir vote on what politicians have promised them during the run up to an election needs their bumps felt.

Perlease, have you been on the Bob Hope? A poll after the debate showed the gap closing significantly. Polls are based on percentages, elections are not. You cannot seriously think that anyone thinks the leader should or even can be changed between now and the election.

Far too late to change leader.
Reform are unlikely to win many seats because their voters are widely dispersed around the country.
In the recent local elections out of 4000 seats that were contested, Reform won 2 seats.

Sam Freedman is quite an experienced political commentator and would not rule it out... the point is that the conservatives are desperate and their prospects really can't get much worse. at this point they are not fighting to win the election they are fighting for the position of His Majesty's Opposition. can you imagine if they lost that? it's something they'll do anything to avoid.

I Think the Tories should bring back Liz Truss as their Leader.    She might just last the 26 days left to lead the Tories into oblivion.

09:34, even in your wildest dreams of hammers and sickles untitled you must know that there is no way the Tories are going to be third.

Question Author

that's what they used to say about the liberals tora... and then it happened. if the tories did end up with a similar voteshare to Reform then it will depend on where those votes are... it isn't impossible.

Shush don't tell TTT. But the Cons are only two points ahead of Reform in the polls ..Latest YouGove poll.

State of the parties going into this General Election.

CONSERVATIVES 346

LIBDEMS 15

REFORM 0

The Conservatives are not going to come third.

Gromit and gulliver support the same party I believe- and yet Gromit always makes sensible, clear and persuasive points without resorting to silly comments, porkies and rudeness which antagonise people and harden their attitudes. Only one of them is an asset to the left.
