I'm guessing the person heard "Mount Elbert", thought "I don't know that" then heard "North America" so blurted out "Canada". 
Not too silly really. Better than passing, I always think.

Well that bit of the sub-continent is all known asNorth Americaisn't it?  I may be wrong, of course.
