Many thanks, Lie-in King! I should have seen 40a and 29d, but it's done now!

Glad I could help 😊

Just a confirmation for this one:
18d Excitedly interrupted cadences at first giving musical effect (6): ?GO?I?  ( AGOGIC )

And I have the hidden lover, a three-letter word, occupying two lines. Is this accepted in crosswords? Thanks again!

Yes to Agogic, Matakari - Agog, excitedly, then the first letters of Interrupted Cadences.

My three-letter word is the more usual crossword version, on a diagonal - and very close to yours, I expect!

PS Did you finish off Genius?

Question Author

Thanks, NACW! Mine is situated within 35a and 38a. And yes, I was pleased to complete Genius.

Thanks, Matakari. I'm afraid we must have different lovers! Mine starts towards the bottom of  the last column, and is completely straightforward/diagonal.

Well I said to myself I wasn't to going to start today but I did a couple of clues and before I knew it I was done :) 13a is my new favourite word! And my hidden word also starts in the right hand column and heads left, sort of backwards in way.

Matakari ..... "pig" over 2 clues is not the required answer!

Fleshpots, nice to see you - and nice to read that we probably have the same lover! Yes, it wasn't a toughie from Fieldfare, but it was enjoyable anyway.

Teacher1, thanks for that - I couldn't see how Matakari was coming up with a suitable three-letter entry... and I don't know how he settled on your suggestion (if he did)!

Hi Nev! Odd thing is I've never thought of these two as "lovers" in the modern sense, so my first thought was something like Titanic haha

Fleshpots, I had the same initial thought about 'lovers', not how I would have initially described the characters - but it wasn't actually 'wrong' in any way. I quite like crosswords misdirecting me...

Matakari, do you think you have the correct lover now? I hope so!

Help required, please. I got the theme immediately and  have entered all the unclued answers. However, these 3 clues are foxing me.

8d. Run through a fully-developed part of motor. (8)I have A?MI?U??

27ac. Mouthful, one stinging, that hurts to be swallowed. (7) I have B?U???E. Bouchie?

20d Amateur left two articles about a hollyhock. (7) I have ?LT??E?

Thank you.

8d. Armature.

27 bouchee

20 Althaea

Thank you both. x

Question Author

Thanks, teacher1 and NACW, I’m still lost as far as the lover is concerned. I don’t  know if I’m looking for a lover from mythology or literature. I do not see it in the children’s story. Help!

Matakari, it's simply one of the characters who went off to sea, by the .... they took some .... and plenty of .... wrapped up in a .... The ellipses are some of the Unclued entries. If you got those so easily, I'm stunned that you didn't know the characters!
