Whenever (in a solicitor's office, for example), I've been asked to take an oath, I've always responded with "I wish to affirm".  I'm now rather worried that my statement might be misunderstood!😊

No.

Forgive me father for I have knocked you flush and continue to beat upon your person.

Thankfully, no .

My parents were nominal Catholics so while I went to a faith based school I never took part in activities where priests with an interest in affirming younger would be about.

That was some affirmation !

^ affirming younger boys

Eeuuww!

Time for a campaign to revive words that seem to have been lost or at least mislaid.

Molester, there's one to start with. Sly, filthy pervert.

Affirming is a surprisingly long ecclesiastical process, it took him over an hour to perform the ancient rite.

Suppose we should be grateful he stopped short of offering succour.

I call them slimebags.

When I was young and commuting into NYC, I'd meet my best friend and her bf on the train. I always had the aisle seat. Until the same creep wearing the same beige raincoat got on what was a very crowded train...and leaned on me. Every single morning. We switched seats around.

...or before anointing the victim with"holy oil",Dougie....

Suppose we should be grateful he stopped short of offering succour.

Thr Roman church recognises 7 sacraments just like the Anglican, and afffirmation is not  one of them

Chris, Well at least you weren't drunk on a train.

Is drunk in the solicitor's office, better ?

That's a new one. I always wondered what gay RC priests called it 😀

Chris, that reminds me, I've affirmed in open court twice as a juryman.

I've been asked to take an oath, I've always responded with "I wish to affirm".

as a Roman, I have always said - " I will swear..."

and some of the young girls clutch their bazoomz and "scream scream scream I cant stand it, oh dear what shall I do, this is harassment in the extreme ( and then give screaming another good go)

and until now I have never understood why
