I wouldn't have been able to answer that one.

I'd forgotten that John Carpenter is a film director, I've never seen the movie in question (which I've just identified through googling) and the significance of the date passed me by.

It needs to be remembered that contestants on The Chase are asked to avoid simply saying "I don't know" or "Pass".  Inevitably then, there are bound to be some wild guesses or jokey answers.

I wouldn't have kown the answer either.

The clue is October 31st - Halloween - but I doubt it would have occurred to me on the spur of the moment.  The director's name would have meant nothing to me.

I missed that clue...

The fact that there is a date at all should make it obvious even if you never heard of the film or the director. Just distill the real question from the words.

Pinocchio?

distillation takes time - something the contestants don't have...

Sorry, it's not a TWAU. IThe name John Carpenter means nothing to me. On the spur of the  moment I wouldn't have got that and I doubt many would have known it or worked it out from the date under pressure when the clock is ticking. If you don't know it immediately it's  better to say any old answer rather than waste time.

Question Author

"the name John Carpenter means nothing to me. " - irrelevant. The real question is, "what date is october 31st"? You know that right?

You ridicule people for simply giving a wrong answer, TTT.  Wrong answers don't qualify as TWAUs.  Classics like 'Name a bird with a long neck' - 'Naomi Campbell' - are valid TWAUs.   They're funny.

"You ridicule people for simply giving a wrong answer, TTT.  Wrong answers don't qualify as TWAUs." - nope, it's not about wrong answers it's about implausible answers that cannot be right or wrong answers when the actual answer is in the question like in this case. What happens on oct 31? Halloween! correct well I'll go to the foot of our stairs.

Naomi, remember the classic one from Family Fortunes?

Q: Name an attraction you might see in Paris?

A: Hawaii. 😂 LOL!

It doesn't seem to have occurred to you that you're so often the only one who finds your examples funny.  That's because they're not.  It's just people under pressure givng wrong answers.  No one on this thread is laughing.

Question Author

09:54 naomi, I've said before if these disturb you so much ignore.

They don't disturb me.  They make you foolish.

I think they're funny. It's only a joke, yer know, Naomi. Chill! Chill! That's what Manning used to say. It's only a joke. Don't take it serious.

On lots of occasions he would end by saying: I know my stuff doesn't suit everyone, so if you've been offended by anything I've said tonight, then it's yer own *** fault for coming!

There you go, TTT.  You've got a fan.  😂

Question Author

I have plenty of fans, please ignore these naomi.

Some of these are good. Most are not funny or are not TWAUs but just a vehicle for you to show how clever you think you are. I will ignore them because of your rudeness to anyone who admits they wouldn't have got the question right.

My first reaction if answering under pressure might have been a film about the assassination of JFK which was round about then.
