runner in forrest gump

hi been watching forrest gump recently and does anyone know the name of the real life man who ran across america(for no particular reason) which was copied for this film. i've tried many google searches but cant seem to narrow it down enough

Try Frank Gianino ( although he did plan the run I think).

There's a web site here that lists everyone whose ever done it but certainly the pic of Frank looks like the Forest Gump! Hope this helps.

Could you possibly be thinking of Terry Fox, the terminal cancer patient who began an epic quest to run across Canada in 1980? Sadly he didn't complete the run, but had made it well over halfway (some 3,339 miles) before his health became too bad for him to continue. He was taken to hospital and eventually passed away on 28th June 1981 at the age of 22.
