Watched that last night, always thought Jim Carrey was quite funny, but never realised Andy Kaufman was, i just remember him as being the little man out of Taxi. Just wanted to say i haven't laughed so much in ages especially at 'Tony Clifton'. Has anyone else watched it and thought the same thing or just thought it was a pile of cr*p? Just interested in your views!

I watched it ages ago and loved it,didn't realise it was on last nite or I would have watched it again. Like you say I didn't know all that stuff about Andy Kaufman. The REM song also makes more sense once you've watched the film. Jim Carey was ace in the part. Can't think of anyone else who could've played it better.

This is a prime example of one neation's cultural por sports icon being another nation's bit-part player. For UK audiences, Andy Kaufman is Latka (sp) in Taxi but Americans know him as a far more rounded character.

A similar confusion has occured in Celebrity Big Brother where Dennis Rodman is a huge star - probably as much a household name as Robbie Williams, but unkown outside a small basketball fandom over here. Contrast that with the looks of confusion on the American housemates' faces when Sir Jimmy rolled in - jangle jangle - who?

It was a very funny film . Jim Carrey was quite restrained (most of the time). Using the real cast of "Taxi" just as background characters , except of course Danny DeVito, who played another role added to the fun. David Letterman and others also appeared as themselves. Actually stayed awake for a late night film for a change .
How to turn a question about Andy Kaufman into some cobblers about Big Brother - way to go andy-hughes
Like many Britons, I also only really knew Andy Kaufman as Latka from Taxi, but felt I knew a lot more about him (and wanted to know even more) after watching this film a while back. Jim Carrey is normally one of those people I can take or leave, but I thought he was great in this film.

I did a bit of research on Kaufman afterwards - quite a fascinating and ultimately moving story. Some of his fans still maintain his death is just the greatest and most outrageous prank he's ever played!

maybe so... Who was playing Tony Clifton at the end if it wasn't Andy or his friend, singing "i will survive" (sorry forgotten his name!)?
