Star Wars films were better before CGI - Discuss!
6 Answers
Are my husband and I alone in thinking that the first three Star Wars films made, (episodes 4,5 & 6) were heaps better than the new CGI'd up to their eyeballs episodes 1, 2 and 3? I for one think that if objects in a film are made from things you can actually reach out and touch, it makes them seem all the more real. (And ladies, wouldn't we all like to touch Han Solo?)

With CGI techniques, it's possible to achieve physics and effects not possible with models, but I think you sacrifice a sense of realism.
Having said all of that, the most recent remastered (and remastered again for good measure) DVD edition strikes a perfect balance between CGI and models. For more complex shots and effects, CGI techniques were used, yet 90% of all ships, etc. were physically built models, which really worked for me.

I was a child of the 70's so Star Wars: A New Hope is very close to my heart. I've seen it so many times I know the entire script blah blah blah. I'm not against CGI as a technology because it has brought alot of magic to films, but I think with the last three chapters, their charm is in their naivity. Now I would love them to re-release the films, pre-remastering on DVD but it looks as though I'll have to join the 21st century!!
i have to say that myself and my brother spent many an hour playing out star wars in our youth - and i couldnt envisgae it any other way than me being princess leah and him being luke - it just wouldnt be the same - especiallly if my bro was to become jar jar binks over night - OMG what wud the world come to 8-) hehehe
