I've wondered that too, I'll be interested to read an answer if anyone knows (I've obviously got too much time on my hands, wondering about stuff like this...)

According to an interview with James Redmond, the actor who plays him, on http://www.bbc.co.uk/drama/casualty/asktheactors/interviews/index.shtml?content/_james_2/page2 the reason hasn't been revealed yet.
