Prison film

I'm looking for a film that is based in an American prison. I believe that the leading male actor is someone similar to kevin bacon or river phoenix. In the film the leading actor has his tendons cut as punishment and his lawyer brings a prostitute into the prison. That is all I can remember. Can anyone help with the film name???
