World Cup Animated Series

I wonder if anyone knows of an animated series (possibly anime) whose main character was a sports journalist who covered various World Cups? The journalist was an elderly man whose grandchildren played football, and he often recited memorable games and events through flashbacks. It had a very catchy theme song that included the lyrics 'Ciao ciao America'. I watched it in the late '90s but I'm sure it's far older.
