I recently wore a pair of monthly contacts lenses for over a year without taking them out. i went for an eye test today and my eyes are no worse than they were a year ago. I was expecting them to fall out but they are as healthy as ever. Is it a myth that you have to change your contacts then ?

Can't understand why you would even risk damaging your eyes like that!
I have 30 day contact lenses and I used to keep them in for about 2 months at a time before I'd remember to change them. One day for no reason one of my eyes swelled up so badly that they couldnt actually get the lense out for 3 days and could have done permenant damage to my eye. Now I make sure I write the date down on my calander!

I know that it was aking a big risk but i just could not be bothered changing them ! will do from now.....ps not looking for criticism from the first person to answer !
Hi there - can only tell you what happened to a friend of mine - she kept her monthlys in for 2 - 3 months and when she went to opticians, he said she had some uneveness under eyelid which can in time scratch the eye. Apparantly, if they turn your eyelid inside out (which my optician does to me too on my annual checkup) they can see the state of the inside of your eyelid and the skin surface needs to be smooth and clear. My friends were lumpy and these lumps can irritate your eye - the optician did say that she needed to have changed her lenses more often to avoid these 'old' lenses from damaging the skin under her eyelids, and in turn scratching her eye. Hope this helps.
Some opticians are full of ****. When I started wearing lenses in 1996, I went to the Co-op and got the type you could use for 3 months before they were replaced. A year later, I went to Specsavers and got the monthly ones becasue they were offering them for the same monthly price. Guess what? They were the same ones!! I showed the old packing to the new optician and he said they were no different. So I do not worry if I do not remember to change mine regularly.
I think the lenses may have irreparably damaged your eyesight...this is the 'Film and TV' section, your question would seem to belong in 'Body and Soul'...
