someone please put me out of my misery and tell me what i have seen the actor playing billy mitchells future father-in-law in before?

he has a familiar face and a really distinctive voice, i know ive seen him in a program when he was a lot younger but cant for the life of me recall it.

now i know why i recognized him, he was in the episode of fawlty towers i watched on uk gold last night! was 1979 so couldn't place the voice but knew the deep voice.

i also remember him in lovejoy and inspector morse.
