If I were you, I would think about it a bit more and know the facts before trying to convince your mum. If you know more about it then you can talk to her and discuss what you know. Sometimes though, Mum's really do know best! Good luck in what you choose to do!
This looks like a useful source of information: here and here" target="_blank">http://www.navelring.com/information/lipandlabret.htm">h ere
this has some brief info on scarring. I should think that a 'normal' lip ring scar would be no worse or noticeable than a bad chicken pox or zit scar. But remember it will have a little hole - do you have any friends with a navel ring? if so, ask if you can see theirs without the stud in. THat will give you an idea what the scar will look like when you take it out. (probably smaller on your lip though)
Why not get a stud (labret) rather than a ring? I personally think they look much nicer. When it is healed up you can get some very small studs to go in, which i think look better than a ring dangling about. Also it will be easier to disguise should you need to. You need to decide before you get it done though, because they will pierce at a slightly different angle whether you have a stud or ring.
Also, as the guy said in the third link, why not wait til you are 18. Then you will have more time to think about it, and you won't need your mom's permission to get it done. Also as it says in the link, any place who pierces an under 18 year old might not be the best place to get it done.
I toyed with the idea of getting a nose or lip ring when I was 17, but knew my parents would hate it, so I didn't. When I got to uni I thought about again but decided I didn't want to do anything permanent to my face. I got a navel piercing instead to satisfy my curiosity, maybe you could do that instead first? Easier to disguise for those job interviews!
I'd advise waiting until your braces are out before getting it done. Normal movement of the mouth isn't a problem with regards to the piercing rubbing against teeth, but the irregular surface of teeth with a brace might be odd - it'd certainly feel unnatural. If I were you I would definitely wait.
The scar from lip piercing is not big. A small dot below the lip will not be particularly noticeable later in life. Facial piercings and tattoos are more prevalent at the moment then they used to be, so when our generation are getting old there'll still be a lot of people with piercings, and minor scars. Just think about the people who get their earlobes stretched! Lip piercings tend to heal fairly quickly, faster than ears.
As far as cream goes, ask for the piercer's advice and follow it. Saliva is a mild antiseptic so usually it wouldn't be strictly necessary to use anything on the piercing, but definitely consult the piercer on this.
When I was persuading my parents to let me get mine done, (which they FINALLY agreed to), the most persuasive point was that I was well-versed on how to care for the piercing, healing times, etc. etc. so they were convinced that I'd done my research and had been thinking about it for a while, and that I was serious about it.
The hole will be quite large - big enough to fit the jewellery through!
www.bmezine.com is a fantastic resource. Show your mum this FAQ for parents and the lip-piercing section of the risks page - there's a lot of stuff on there about piercings, definitely worth looking at the site so that you know what to look for when you're getting it done, and what questions to ask.
Good luck!
i've had it done before.
It does leave a pock mark sized scar. Like a zit scar. I don't know about the maderma cream but the piercer will give you a cream or recommend one when you get the piercing done.
Ways to convince your mom? Well, some parents are just not into piercings or tattoos so no matter what you say she may disagree. If you are not of age to get one on your own and she doesn't let you - I wouldn't get one without her knowledge. This will sound cheesy, but minimum age requirements for piercings/tatoos are there for a reason and it is better to wait until you are 18 then do something secret (although you can't hide a lip piercing) or in a hurry which you will just regret later!
and you have braces - oh heck, just read that - i'd definitely wait until after you take them out! the lip ring rubs against your gums and I don't even want to imagine it getting stuck on your braces - OUCH!
You will definitely get a big scar from that!
good luck!
I was waiting in shop and a guy in front of me had both ear lobes fitted with porcelain designer 10p size 'things, which were inside the skin. These looked like the African women have in their lips, and he was easily getting on for fifty. Gawd knows what he will look like when he is a lot older - but if that's his scene !
I think that if you got it done you would regret it some time in the future, you are already talking about hygine and creams etc., give it a good bit of thought.
