The Alan Partridge Canned Laughter Scandal

Listen up people, there is NO canned laughter whatsoever used on I'm Alan Partridge. It is filmed in a studio in front of a live studio audience. This was recently confirmed by one of the producers on Points of View. It is obvious when you see the actors pausing for the audience to finish laughing before delivering their next line. Where did this rumour come from and why do people persist in repeating it when they clearly have no idea what they are talking about?

I think it's simply that a lot of people use the term "canned laughter" simply to describe any audience laughter that bugs them, rather than in its true sense of laughter artificially added.
