What about 'Hero' starring Jet Li: An unforgettable colossal martial arts epic where Tony Leung (as Broken Sword) and Maggie Cheung (as Flying Snow) -- non-kungfu persons, these are -- elevate themselves, martial-artly and emotionally, several thousand lightyears above the expectations of the fandom of Hong Kong movies since their debut in 1980's.

I recommend Kurosawa's Yojimbo, Seven Samurai and Ikiru.
Also Jackie Chan's classic Police Story and Project A.
Chow Yun Fat (from CTHD) is also great in Killer, Hong Kong 1948 and City On Fire.
Re: Battle Royale - I know it was a comic but someone should have told the director that it's difficult to get up let alone run around after suffering multiple bullet wounds. And the soundtrack resembled a Greatest Hits of Western classical music (Blue Danube, Air on a G String...)
