iv told you b4 about my 17 year old cousin a few weeks ago wen i was asking bout him paying tax the thing is he is really worried he isnt being paid enough hes on 100.00 a week and works as a admin clerk his friends are on 200.00 a week but they work in a factory packing papers.

the thing is iv told him were will his friends be in a few years time wen working in a factory they cant go much further.

wereas my cousin could be successful in the future and get a job promo to manager or something.

is ot best that he is patient or should he find a new job thanks in advance SSx

I'd get him to ask his friends what all the top earners in the factory are on, people who have worked their for years, most likely exactly the same as all his friends. As you say there are virtually 0 prospects in a factory compared to working in an office environment and he needs to wait his turn to move up the ladder.

Personally I'd suggest he stays where he is but at the end of the day it's up to him.

Is he working full time, sam? If he is, assuming 8 hours a day, that is only �2.50 and that isn't much is it. The minimum wage for under 18s (no longer of compulsory school age) is �3, so he should be getting at least this - assuming he isn't on an apprenticeship? I suppose if he has short working days he might just be scraping �3 an hour. Minimum wage once he hits 18 is �4.25.

As to whether he should get another job - you're probably right about the factory work, but it depends on his exact situation. If there are a lot of jobs going in his area he might find a similar one for more pay, but if jobs are hard to come by he might be better off staying where he is. Certainly the path to a promotion is a bit more clearly set out in an office environment.

I'm sure there are other ABers who know more about the pay situation and whether he can challenge his boss for more ��.

Hi,

I worked in admin on about �120 a week a few years ago whilst everyone else I knew earned �200+ working in an ice cream factory. They were all on a lot more money, out clubbing a lot. Whilst I was on very little and stayed home.

4 years down the line Im now an Accountant.

I could have taken two routes with my life,
1- work in factories earning more money, socialising a lot more, probably end up with 2 kids living in a council house by now. Having to force myself to work in unskilled jobs to feed the kids and pay the bills.

or

2- I worked in admin to gain the experience of working in an office environment, dealing with customers, dealing with clients. Then I went on a basic bookkeeping course which gained me entry into accountancy, then after 3 gruelling long years with not much of life, work study work study, not much socialising, no real time for a proper relationship. I have now qualified as an accountant. The work experience was important to me because I never sat A-levels

To get ahead you have to put in real effort and make sacrifices. Although it feels my life has been on a 4 year pause, now I'm qualified its paid off - thankfully - and now I can start to live a life, a better one than if I had given up office admin.

I would still say he does have to think about moving forward from admin and using it as experience rather than a permanent job. He could try a bit of study along the way like Management Courses, health & safety, gain some NVQ's, Business Administration.

Also better mention that I was brought up in a council house on a rough estate up until I was 15 years so I can make comments to those who might be offended by them.

Well I'm 17 and I work part-time in M&S (I'm still at school) and I earn �150 a week for just Saturday and Sunday, so he's getting ripped off.
