It tells the story of a young girl who pretends to be a boy in order to feed her family. Another tear-jerker is, 'Turtles Can Fly, which is set in a Kurdish refugee camp on the eve of the US invasion of Iraq.
If you like action films, I'd recommend 'La Haine' with Vincent Cassell and 'Run, Lola, Run' with Franka Potente.
I've also just watched a Russian war film called, 'Come and See', which makes 'Saving Private Ryan' look like a kiddies tea party. I was emotionally tired out by the end of it.

jno - I should have mentioned that I am after fairly new films. I watch a lot of films generally and foreign movies are included, but I have been known to pick some really duff ones! My favourites are:-
- Jeux d'enfants (love me if you dare)
- La Vita e Bella
- La Haine
- 13 (Tzameti)
- Old Boy
- Cidade de Deus
- Amelie
- Irreversible
- Run Lola Run
Oooh where to start!
Downfall, Goodbye Lenin, Cinema Paradiso, La vita e bella, Amores Perros, City Of God,
One of my faves is Amelie - utterly charming film -sweet, funny and poignant with stunning performance by Audrey Tatou plus beautiful original music.
Anything by Pedro Almodovar particularly Todo sobre mi madre (All about my mother) and Hable con ella (Talk to her)
On the darker side the german film Anatomy with Franka Potente is v good.
Oh and Battle Royale and Ringu (the original japanese film which spawned the much inferior american remake) are also excellent.

If early 1980s isn't too early for you, and you like action films then I can thoroughly recommend Le Cop, La balance and Les Valseuses (the last starring Gerard Depardieu) If you like romantic/wistful then virtually anything by Eric Rohmer will fit the bill (same sort of period) Nothing much ever happens in a Rohmer film but you just enjoy the atmosphere!
