I remember Master Bates, Seaman Staines and Roger the cabin boy - but were there any other 'double-entendre' characters ?

think you'll find the cabin boy was called Tom, wasn't all this 'double-entendre' stuff was a load of bull****?
I'm afraid that Suzyflip's right. www.snopes.com/radiotv/tv/pugwash.htm
Dunno. Did you know that all receptionists at the Essex branch of Siemens have to answer the phone with "good morning Siemens, Staines"
When did they move Staines to Essex? Last time i was there it was still in Surrey!
Staines is in Middlesex! Still some opportunities there perhaps...!
To answer the original question, it is a complete myth, but it was originally reported (surprise surprise) in the Guardian, who were later forced to retract it. http://www.snopes.com/radiotv/tv/pugwash.htm

These names were created in an experiment by the infamous satirist/comedian Victor Lewis-Smith, to see if it was possible to invent an urban myth that would be spread for years to come by the gullible. The experiment was obviously a success!
